Go wild! Secure unlimited subdomains with one Wildcard SSL certificate

A Wildcard SSL certificate is engineered to secure a single domain and an unlimited number of its first-level subdomains. Wildcard SSL takes the work out of managing dozens of single-domain SSL certificates. You’re totally free to use additional subdomains at any time during the life-cycle of the certificate.

How Wildcard Certificates Work

Every Wildcard SSL certificate begins with an asterisk * (or wildcard). The wildcard represents any valid first-level subdomain of the same base domain.

A wildcard certificate for *.mydomain.com will work for secure.mydomain.com, mail.mydomain.com, support.mydomain.com and vpn.mydomain.com, but not ftp.mydomain.net.

Wildcard SSL Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a Wildcard and a Multi-Domain certificate?

Unlike Multi-Domain SSL certificates, Wildcard SSL certificates allow you to secure just one domain (example.com), but with an unlimited number of first-level subdomains (sub1.example.com, sub2.example.com, subx.example.com). A Multi-Domain certificate, on the other hand, will support a mixture of different domain names (mysite.com, mystore.net, mail.outlook.org).

How do I generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) for a Wildcard certificate?

Just like a regular CSR except that every CSR for a Wildcard certificate must begin with an asterisk (*.example.com, *.shop.example.com). We've put together some detailed instructions. Find out How to Generate a CSR for a Wildcard SSL Certificate.

Can I get a Wildcard like this: mail.*.example.com?

No. Wildcard certificates must always begin with an asterisk and there can only be one asterisk. Additionally, you cannot get a wildcard for *.*.example.com.

Do I have to contact GeoCerts every time I want to add a new subdomain?

No. A Wildcard certificate will work for every valid first-level subdomain from the get-go. You don't have to do anything to the certificate when you add additional sites or services.

How do I use a Wildcard SSL certificate on more than one server?

You'll need to export the private key, server certificate (public key) and any intermediate CA certificates from the first server and then import to additional servers. This is easy to do If you're using all Windows servers. From the first Windows server export your certificate keys to a PFX file and import to other Windows servers.

How many physical servers can I install my cert on?

There is no limit. With unlimited server licenses you're free to install on as many as you wish.
